MFPE Political Action Committee and Ballot Initiative (PAC)
A history of success!

WHAT IS MFPE PAC?
MFPE's Political Action Committee and Ballot Initiative (PAC) is composed of the locally elected members of MFPE's Board of Directors. PAC members are your elected representatives.

PAC is accountable to you and to all MFPE members.

WHAT DOES PAC DO?
PAC helps elect Montana candidates for public office from both parties who support:

• strong public services

• strong public education (k-12 & higher education)

• Montana public employees and the important work they do

• the right of working people to have a say in their working conditions

PAC also helps defeat bad ballot initiatives and pass good ones (more on those below).

HOW DOES COPE HELP ELECT GOOD CANDIDATES?
PAC members interview candidates and make recommendations to their fellow MFPE members about which candidates fit the criteria above.

PAC also contributes money to these candidates' campaigns  to help them win.

WHO DECIDES WHAT CANDIDATES TO RECOMMEND AND HELP?
Recommendations are based strictly on issues, not on political party.

Your elected PAC representatives interview candidates, research candidate statements and records, and make candidate recommendations to you and your fellow MFPE members.

WHAT ARE SOME OF COPE'S VICTORIES?

Helping elect MFPE members who run for office: MFPE members are certainly not the only candidates PAC helps elect. But MFPE members make particularly great candidates and great public officials. They know our issues, and they stand up for our members. Here are some of the member candidates PAC helped elect:

  • 11 MEA-MFT members to the 2011 Montana State Legislature.

  • MEA-MFT member Linda McCulloch, first to the legislature, then Superintendent of Public Instruction, then Montana Secretary of State in 2008.

  • MEA-MFT member Denise Juneau as Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2008.

Passing ballot initiatives that make Montana a better place to live: COPE was instrumental in passing:

  • The pension security constitutional amendment, to protect public employee and teacher retirements

  • The Six mill levy for university system, essential to funding higher education

  • The minimum wage increase, a pay raise for hard working Montanans

Defeating bad ballot initiatives: COPE helped defeat:

  • CI-97, the initiative aimed at crippling public services and public education

  • CI-75, the initiative to require a super-majority vote to increase taxes that fund public services & education

WILL COPE TELL ME HOW TO VOTE?
No. Never has, never will. Your vote is your choice. PAC just gives you carefully researched information that you can use to make your choice. Because of COPE, MFPE members are some of the best informed voters in Montana!
